Shinning Like The Stars Above

by
Dr. Dwight Garrett

Philippians 2:12-18 (NIV):

12: Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling,

13: for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.

14: Do everything without complaining or arguing,

15: so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe

16: as you hold out the word of life—in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing.

17: But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you.

18: So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.

In my journey here on this earth, one of the greatest joys and pleasures I have found, is to stand beneath the awesome beauty of a clear and starlit night sky - gazing at the vastness of God's beauty and wonders.

If we stand outside on a clear, starlit night, and fix our eyes on the Heavens above, set against the black expanse, stars twinkle and glimmer and shine in their silent witness to the Creator Who carefully set each one in place. Similarly, Christians shine like stars in a dark world. Each believer has been given a place in which to bear witness to the Lord.

There are times we've been discouraged, thinking that we contribute little to Christ's work. Many times other Christians we know have more powerful testimonies. They have impressive talents and gifts to use in winning the world to Christ. But Christ has not called us to impress the world—He asks only that we shine in it. Then He does the rest, for the work of winning the world is beyond our power.

The God of this world has blinded the minds of nonbelievers so that they can't even see the light of the Gospel. Only when God breaks through does that Heavenly light penetrate their inner darkness. Our part is to be faithful in keeping our testimony bright, being available for whatever the Lord asks, praying that He will use our love and witness for Him to guide others on a pathway that leads right to our Saviour.

The next time you find yourself standing beneath the majestic beauty of a clear and starlit night – fix your eyes on the Heavens above, and your heart on Jesus, and ask the Him to fill your heart with joy and expectancy that He will use your life to bring light to someone who does not know Him.
